Bruce's Story

The Case of Bruce Schuler
Graeme Crowley Investigates
Bruce Schuler was a 48-year-old gold prospector who vanished without a trace while prospecting near Palmerville Station in Far North Queensland in July 2012.
What followed was one of Queensland’s most complex homicide investigations — one that led to a murder conviction without a body ever being found.
The Disappearance of Bruce Shuler
On July 9, 2012, Bruce set out with three other men to prospect for gold on the Palmer River. He was last seen that morning near a gully on Palmerville Station. Witnesses reported seeing station owners Stephen Struber and Dianne Wilson near Bruce shortly before gunshots were heard. Bruce never returned.
The Investigation
The case was codenamed Operation Kilo Principle. Police launched an extensive search across rugged terrain, aided by helicopters, forensic officers, and search-and-rescue teams. Although Bruce’s body was never found, investigators discovered blood, DNA, and personal belongings near the gully — confirming foul play.
Arrests and Trial
Despite the lack of a body, forensic and witness evidence led to the arrest and eventual conviction of Struber and Wilson in 2015. They were sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
Fiona Schuler’s Fight for Justice
Bruce’s wife, Fiona, became a powerful advocate for victims, successfully campaigning for ‘No Body, No Parole’ legislation in Queensland — ensuring convicted murderers must reveal the location of their victim’s remains before being eligible for parole.
